Your Environment...Your Health
This informational and
educational program is offered through the Community Outreach and
Education Core of the Environmental Health Sciences Center for
Molecular and Cellular Toxicology with Human Applications at Wayne
State University. The program is designed to provide current
information to the public, on issues of environmental health
concern. The Your Environment....Your Health! program offers
a speakers bureau that consists of many professionals that are
qualified to answer your questions and address your concerns.
Also offered through the
program is a "hands on" informational hour-long presentation on
prevention strategies aimed at lead poisoning, entitled "Get the
Lead Out!". Because of the industrial nature of the businesses and
old housing stock located in southeast Michigan, lead poisoning is a
relevant issue for both the suburban and urban populations of
Detroit. Numerous organ systems in our bodies are adversely affected
by exposure to lead. Chronic, low grade exposure to lead can alter
functional development of the brain, particularly during the
vulnerable phase of growth in young children. Therefore, young
children and the unborn children of pregnant mothers are at highest
risk for lead poisoning. Exposure to lead may result in deficits
such as lowered intelligence, behavioral problems and poor school
performance. Although children are at the greatest risk of showing
the adverse affects associated with lead poisoning, inhalation of
lead-containing dusts and fumes by adults, in the workplace or by
recreational exposures, may result in a significant health risk.
Who Can Use This Program?
